Six-hundred-thousand years ago the largest volcano in the Western Hemisphere erupted; covering much of what is now the Central United States in a thick layer of ash. The cataclysm left behind a massive caldera that today is known as Yellowstone National Park and it’s about to happen again.
After a meeting with the President, Milton Bainbridge, a Yellowstone volcanologist is found dead under mysterious circumstances. USGS volcanologist, Jason Trask, is called in from overseas as a replacement, much to the disappointment of Bainbridge’s assistant Carlene Carlson, who was hoping to be promoted.
Trask and Carlson discover records, left behind by Bainbridge, that indicate the super volcano is about to erupt again, only this time the survival of millions of Americans, in thirteen states, are threatened if they cannot be evacuated from the deadly path of the fallout. To make matters worse, a terrorist organization is planning on using the disarray in the aftermath of a Yellowstone eruption to topple the government of the United States. Trask and Carlson face off against a government that doesn't believe an eruption is eminent and a terrorist organization preparing to use that denial to their advantage.
Caldera is a thrilling peek into the lives of the volcanologists assigned to Yellowstone National Park and the challenges they face when presented with the reality of a national disaster of unimaginable proportions.

Caldera A Yellowstone Park thriller edition by Larry LaVoie Literature Fiction eBooks

Old Faithful begins continuously erupting, which it has never done before. Two professional geologists just give the famous geyser the kind of quick look Chevy Chase gave the Grand Canyon in National Lampoon's Vacation, then casually continue their conservation. At that point, I knew something was very wrong with this book. I love Yellowstone National Park and I enjoyed the volcanology in the book. But the entire story was unrealistic and terribly disjointed. A rock slide threatens hikers, then is unmentioned in the next chapter. People are thrown from bicycles by earthquakes and even into expanding lakes, then are casually back at their computer stations, gabbing away like nothing happened. But the biggest problem with this story is the author carries his main characters hundreds of miles from the park when the old volcano finally blows, robbing the story of what should have been its most dramatic narratives. And did I mention the absolutely ridiculous side plot about Russians hiding inside a mountain in Nevada, apparently for decades, just waiting for Yellowstone to blow so they can take over the country?

Caldera A Yellowstone Park thriller edition by Larry LaVoie Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Caldera got off to a slow start, as characters were introduced. Once it got going, by 20%, it raced along at a faster clip. It was more a thriller than a post-apocalyptic novel of death & destruction. Millions died, but only in passing, in the background. I would have preferred more of that and less involvement of the Russians. Yep, there are Russians involved and the "big surprise" was pretty obvious early on in the book. There were a lot of typos which took away from the story. "Roll" used for "role", "heard" used for "herd", "lightening" for "lightning" [only once], too many commas and loads of missing quotation marks when people spoke.
But the novel was good enough that when I finished it, I looked for similar works by the same author. Overall, 4.5-5 stars for the story and 3 for grammar and spelling.
Very rarely will I pay $9.99 for a book, and it's even less likely for a book when so many great books can be had for $2.99 or less.

I won't give a synopsis; that's what the description is for.

This book was worth the price. Even the subplots were closely connected to the main plot.

I am a sucker for natural disaster movies and books, and this one kept me enthralled from beginning to end. It was so believable, I could almost feel as if I were ther.

I have very few compaints about this book, none of which are related to the story. There were some issues with tense and words inserted or missing within sentences. My biggest sticking point was an absence of commas throughout the book. I'm a fast reader, and it's annoying when I have to stumble to a halt in order to mentally insert punctuation and reread a sentence. It happened enough times to really irritate.
I enjoyed reading about the super volcano, Yellowstone. Loved the characters, earthquakes, terrorists, USGS personnel, and the politicians involved in this story. I live in the Willamette Valley with a great view of several Cascade Mts. Lately, we have been living under the threat of the overdue tectonic plates off the coasts of Oregon and Washington. It can be paralyzing, but there is potential danger just about anywhere people live. You can prepare and pray. But, if it happens there isn't much more people can do than try and survive.

The volcanologists in this story were not allowed to warn the public. I think there are only eight super volcanoes in the world. I wouldn't want to work or live inside the caldera of any like Yellowstone or the one in Italy. Thumbs up on this book.
Great writing. Started reading about 0800 yesterday till about 2200. 0700 this morning here in Utah, news talking about Yellowstone being a Super Volcano Etc. You wonder if the news is keeping us from being uneasy. I have apps on earthquakes and volcanos which have been very active. Many quakes of 1.2, 3.0 and up, which are normal, but many in the 4, 5 and the 6 range. Many in the Ring Of Fire. Too many in S. E. Idaho, the Soda Springs area, which is about the half way point between Salt Lake and Yellowstone Park, and it makes you think and have a Heads Up. If you study the scriptures, you can see what's coming. I recommend it, it will hold your attention and get you thinking to learn more about Volcanos and Earthquakes which cause many from moving of Tectonic Plates. I also recommend a book called Volcanoes, Earthquakes and Tsunamis by David A. Rothery. This is a teaching book, like a text book, piece by piece on this subject, so you will know what authors are talking about on many of these book of this subject.
