In the full-length follow-up to In Love With Lucy, see what the office has in store for Lucy's friends....
A year after her divorce from her manipulative, sweet-talking ex-husband, Yancy Stevens has settled into life as a single mother to her eighteen month old little girl. She enjoys her work, loves her daughter, and has wonderful girlfriends to lean on. While her life isn’t perfect, she’s finally back in control of it.
There’s just one problem Charles Faulkner. Her new colleague in the office is arrogant and can’t seem to remember her name. However, it’s probably for the best that he’s a jerk because he’s also the most handsome man she’s ever seen. If she didn’t detest him, she would become a bumbling idiot every time they spoke.
After a heated argument, his attitude toward her changes dramatically and sparks of a different sort begin to fly. Against her better judgment, Yancy takes the risk and gives Charles a chance. As she learns more about him, she truly wants to let go of her past, drop her defenses and try to trust him. It’s a scary proposition for a woman who’s learned the hard way, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

In the interest of full disclosure, I will tell you that a few of the ladies here at Scandalicious Book Reviews were involved in the editing and publishing process of Earning Yancy. I still wanted to take the opportunity to share my honest thoughts but felt you should be aware of my personal connection to this book.
Earning Yancy is the second installment in the NSFW series by C.C. Wood which centers around a group of five women who meet and became close friends while working in the same high-rise office building. Although originally dubbed a novella series, Yancy and Charles seemed to grab hold of C.C. and she wasn't able to shake them until a story of just over 200 pages had taken root. I, for one, am more than happy with this outcome! C.C. Wood can write a hot little novella and long before I became a contributor to Scandalicious Book Reviews, I read Friends with Benefits and Frenemies, the first two novellas in the Girl Next Door series, and really enjoyed them. Novellas can be great little reads that provide instant gratification with a quick story or can be the perfect pick-me-up you need after an emotional book hangover. But sometimes, the story needs a little more time for realistic development and explanation and C.C. completely does these characters justice with the right amount of back story, an organically developing relationship, with genuine trials and tribulations of a budding office romance for a juggling single parent.
Yancy Stevens was a completely relatable character for me. I returned to work full-time after my first child was born and part-time after my second and although I am not divorced, my husband works out of town more than he is home. Yancy struggles with balancing a career while guilt ridden over being a working parent all while riding a caffeine induced high to keep it all together. Let's not forget the jackass ex-husband who abandoned her and sweet baby Carolena leaving Yancy emotionally and financially on her own. Yancy is a very likeable character who is devoted to her daughter, has a dedicated work ethic and even though she has supportive family and friends, she still struggles with self doubt and exhaustion. While she doesn't begrudge her situation (read between the lines, she is not a bitter man hater) she definitely has a different version of her own happily ever after.
Enter Charles Faulkner. A new co-worker who shares the same rung on the corporate ladder with Yancy, he comes across as aloof and completely clueless whenever he interacts with her. But is he? After Yancy clears up a few misconceptions, it appears Charles has a change in attitude with an entirely new focus. Charles is the quintessential Beta man. He is charming and sweet with his All-American good looks. There is no hidden agenda. He sees, he likes, he woos. He is caring and kind with a genuine love and respect for his mother and sister. Just as content in front of a t.v. with a beer and a basketball game, he enjoys a chick flick from time to time. Don't equate this to weakness. Charles has no problem protecting his interests or bringing his A-game to the bedroom. While Charles is perfectly rounded out with the right amount of bossy and sweet, impeccable manners and respect, what truly sets him apart is that when he finally has the chance to interact with Yancy's daughter, he doesn't blink an eye. Carolena is an extension of Yancy and he effortlessly returns her affection, is attentive to her needs and without question steps in to help or take care of her. That, is a special man right there! Ahhhh... Charles Faulkner. I would have liked you regardless of whether or not C.C. had compared your external gorgeousness to Captain America. But like all superhero stories, there is always a villain...
With my inside connection, you would think I could give you some insight on what was up next in the series, but I have no clue. It appears the groundwork has been set for Tanya, (did you name her after me?) the ballbusting divorce attorney who seems to have her own office drama unfolding at her law firm. But then quiet, unassuming Grier seems to be hiding something too. Hmmmm, just when you thought it was safe to return to the office...

Earning Yancy NSFW Book 2 edition by CC Wood Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Could be stand alone but you really should read In Love with Lucy. Not only do you get a glimpse of Yancy but you get to read another great book!
Yancy's character had some surprises that you didn't really see in In Love with Lucy. I could immediately relate with her character and life as a whole. At first, Charles, her coworker seems to be an ass and found pleasure in irritating Yancy. Their relationship growth makes a mom like me, want to get lost in the story, over and over again.
This romantic comedy gets 5 stars for
1) The Crack scale
2) Heart
3) Funny
4) Dialogue
This book was crack. Seriously, I started it last night and had to TEAR myself away from it to go to sleep (super late) and all I've wanted to do since is read it. Then, when I realized I was near the end, I stopped reading because I didn't want it to end.
This book has heart. I just... it was... I was... I really felt it, you know?
FUNNY BOOK ALERT CODE RED!
The dialogue in this book pushed it from a 4.85 to a 5 star read. It is witty, funny, sweet, heartfelt. Lovely.
This is my third book by CC Wood and, although Seasons of Sorrow will always hold a place in my heart, I think this is my favorite. Love it.
Earning Yancy, book 2 in the NSFW series was FANTASTIC!
***Book 2 is not a novella like In Love With Lucy ***
I loved In Love With Lucy and like that story, I could not put this book down. One of the things that I love about C.C. Wood's writing is that her characters are so relatable, whether it be a fun series like this one or The Girl Next Door series , a paranormal story like the Bitten Series or even the emotional roller coaster that was Season of Sorrow . These are people that I would hang out with if they were real. And with Yancy, I can completely relate to her feelings of shyness around new people.
Yancy Stevens is a single mother. Her ex-husband left her not long after she had her daughter Carolena (love that name). See I write her daughter and not their daughter because her ex - Cooper - was never really a father to her and Yancy pretty much from her birth raised her like a single mother. She has her steady support group of Lucy ( In Love With Lucy ), Tanya, Grier and Chelsea. And now a possible office romance with Charles Faulkner - her one time nemesis (for being a jerk and calling her Nancy when he knows it is Yancy plus a few other minor jerkiness) and now love interest.
Charles Faulkner has been with the company a month before the story starts. He has this annoying habit of calling Yancy Nancy. One day he just pushes that wrong button and Yancy explodes on him. You see, he was mistakenly under the wrong impression that Yancy was married after hearing her and their boss discuss her daughter. Charles liked Yancy but thought she was off the market so he resorted to juvenile boy behavior with her. Remember in school how if a boy liked you they would pull your hair, tease you, call you the wrong name. Stuff like that. ;-) They apologize to each other for the little blow up that occurred and start to get along. Charles asks Yancy to lunch and from there their little romance begins to bloom.
Everything is going great. Charles is such a sweetheart. He gives Yancy the room and time she needs to feel comfortable dating again and understands her initial resistance to introducing him to her 18 month old daughter. That's one of the things that I really appreciated in this story, that he was understanding and not all Alpha male dominant and tried to force her to be with him on his terms. Just as Yancy is getting comfortable with the new man in her life is when of course her ex makes a reappearance. So what happens? Does this present a strain in Yancy and Charles new relationship? Does Cooper become a part of Carolena's life? Is Cooper trying to win back Yancy and will she go back to him even though she has genuine feelings for Charles? Well, I could tell you but I think it would be more fun to read to see what happens. ;-)
I look forward to the next book in the series.
